DREAMS: A Path to CENTERING: Do-It-Yourself or –with-a-Partner Experiential Cue Sequence

On the GESTALT dream path, you treat each person and thing  in dreams as parts of your experience.  You create dialogues with the elements of the dream for messages about your current being-in-the-world.  You  reverse figure and background and direct your conflicted parts–characters in your dreams–to talk to each other.  Dreams show you what’s you that you see in other people.  You experience fantasies, meet your repressions, and extract existential messages.

In the CENTERING path of dreamwork, you meet disowned, vulnerable, instinctual underdeveloped and new subselves (inner voices).  You find out what these dream voices need and coordinate them.

With HYPNOSIS EXPANSION, you extend your dreams to probe repressed memories of paranormal, extraterrestrial, interdimensional, spiritual, and artistic insights and experiences.  You learn how to direct your dreams as you dream and to remember and use them; you become your own dreammaker.

Finally, in DREAM FITNESS Training, you analyze your role, emotion, expression, clarity and contact in dreams to generate small doable behaviors in your waking life, behaviors that move you toward psychological fitness.  Then, of course, you teach clients this system and monitor the behaviors to which they commit and help them generate their next steps.

In the CENTERING path of dreamwork, you meet disowned, vulnerable, instinctual, underdeveloped and new subselves (inner voices).  You find out what these dream voices need and coordinate them.

DREAM SELVES & CENTER TALK

In the dream exploration below, you have a partner read the cue-sentences to you aloud; you respond.  Then you change roles with your partner and you read the cues to her or him.  Alternately, you read the cues to yourself and do the exercise solo.

You center yourself in a DISCERNING-OBSERVER PERSPECTIVE (Center or Aware Ego) and relate what you remember of the dream.  Alternately, you do the same for a daydream or fantasy you create.

Then you relate the dream from the perspective of the DREAM SELF you thought you were while you dreamed.  Next, you return to your centered perspective and interview this subself.  You ask it and let it tell you what it has done still does for you.

Then you become each of the other characters (people, animals, etc), vehicles (cars. buses and the like), buildings and backgrounds in the dream, for each of them symbolizes one of your SUBSELVES.  You say, as each, what you’re like and what you want the Aware Ego to know.  As each dream character, you ROLEPLAY ENCOUNTERS among the people, objects, backdrops and moods in the dream.

As each character, you speak as one of your subselves, saying what you want, need, have contributed and can give to your discerning center.

[DIRECTIONS]

If you do the exercise below with a partner, tell her or him to read the capitalized words aloud, the words in [square brackets] silently.

SIT ON THIS CUSHION; IT’LL BE THE POSITION FOR YOUR CENTER, THE PLACE FROM WHICH YOU CAN HEAR ALL THE INNER VOICES SYMBOLIZED IN YOUR DREAM.  BECOME OBSERVANT, OBJECTIVE, BALANCED–PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY.   NOD WHEN YOU FEEL CENTERED. 

[When your partner nods, say,] I WANT YOUR POWERFUL, PROTECTIVE AND EVERYDAY SELVES TO KNOW THEY CAN LIMIT WHAT YOU REVEAL AND EXPLORE IN THIS DREAM WORK EXERCISE.  TO THEM I SAY, LET [say your partner’s name] EXPLORE DREAM-SELVES–ESPECIALLY VULNERABLE OR INSTINCTUAL ONES–ONLY TO THE DEGREE YOU FEEL IT’S IN [his or her–choose one]‘S BEST INTEREST NOW.           

OK, CENTER, GO BACK TO THE TIME AND PLACE–NIGHT OR DAY, BED OR BEACH, WHEN YOU DREAMED THE DREAM.   IMAGINE GOING BACK TO SLEEP, EVEN DEEPER, AND AGAIN DREAMING THE SAME DREAM.  

YOU MAY BE ABLE, THIS TIME, TO NOTICE EVEN MORE DETAILS THAN YOU DID BEFORE.  

RECALL THE DREAM (OR MAKE UP A DREAMLIKE STORY ABOUT YOUR MAIN EMOTION NOW). 

OBJECTIVELY RECOUNT THE DREAM (OR STORY) FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE AS CENTER, OBSERVING AND DESCRIBING THE CHARACTER YOU IDENTIFIED AS YOURSELF AND THE OTHER PEOPLE AND FORCES IN THE DREAM.  DESCRIBE THE DOINGS OF THE CHARACTER YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE AS “HE” OR “SHE”, RATHER THAN “I”. [Write down the characters, objects and forces your partner mentions.]

 FROM YOUR CENTER PERSPECTIVE, TELL ME WHAT KIND OF A PERSON YOU SEEM TO BE IN THE DREAM.  

PHYSICALLY MOVE YOUR CUSHION AND BECOME THE PERSON YOU IDENTIFIED WITH YOURSELF IN THE DREAM.  [wait till s/he moves to a space for that voice, Voice 1.]

SAY WHAT YOU’RE LIKE IN THE DREAM.  RETELL THE DREAM IN THE PRESENT TENSE, FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE.  AS YOU TELL IT THIS TIME, SEE, HEAR, FEEL AND LIVE THE DREAM–EVEN MORE THAN YOU DID WHEN YOU DREAMED IT.   

 PUT YOUR BODY IN THE SAME POSITION IT HELD AT A CRITICAL TIME IN THE DREAM.  [Wait till s/he stands, sits, gestures, etc. like s/he did in the dream]

WHAT IS YOUR EXISTENCE LIKE IN THE DREAM, IN THIS POSTURE? 

SIT COMFORTABLY, BUT STAY IN YOUR ROLE AS THE PERSON YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE IN THE DREAM.  YOU’RE ONE OF  [partner’s name]‘S VOICES, OR SUBSELVES. 

 TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF AS THIS SELF; WHO ARE YOU; WHAT’S YOUR JOB.
